Pediatric Ophthalmic Surgery
_Drs. Engel, Rousta, and Sun are conservative with their treatment. In general, a surgical option is only recommended if it offers a clear benefit over non-surgical treatment, and after the child has been observed over a period of time.
As the major referral center for pediatric ophthalmic conditions in the area, our doctors are experienced in treating a large spectrum of pediatric eye disorders, many referred from outlying hospitals. They bring this experience along with their background and continued involvement in the refinement of the latest surgical techniques to give your child the best surgical outcome.
Most surgeries are performed at St. Peter’s University Hospital CARES outpatient center or at Robert Wood Johnson University Children’s Same Day Surgery. Dr. Engel and Rousta also perform surgery at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. All of these facilities are staffed with trained pediatric anesthesiologists, and are dedicated to giving your child the safest and most pleasant experience possible.
Almost all pediatric eye surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, which does not involve an overnight stay. In general, minimally invasive techniques are used, which allows the child to recover quickly and be at full activity level as soon as possible.
Dr. Engel and Dr. Rousta have pioneered a new surgical technique, leading to improved outcomes in pediatric strabismus surgery.
